About Dance Marathon

Dance Marathon is an annual 26.2-hour event in which more than 600 University of Florida students stay awake and on their feet to raise money and awareness for the Children's Miracle Network at Shands Children's Hospitals. Dancers participate in a variety of fun activities such as wacky games and competitions, a group line dance and enjoy entertainment by musicians, dance groups and other student and community organizations. Miracle families who have overcome incredible odds inspire dancers by sharing their testimonies throughout the event. Dancers are faced with both mental and physical challenges in an effort to symbolize the obstacles faced by the children at Shands. In addition to the main event at the end of spring semester, DM at UF also hosts a number of community events. These events include the 5K Miracle Walk/Run, DM Pancake Breakfast, a kick off rally and a bowling tournament.

The 2007 Dance Marathon at the University of Florida was held March 31-April 1, in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center and raised more than $362,000 for Children's Miracle Network at Shands Children's Hospitals. In the 13 years of Dance Marathon at the University of Florida's existence, more than $2.8 million has been raised and 100 percent of the net proceeds have gone directly to benefit the children and adolescents treated at Shands. Each year the total amount of money raised is donated to the Children's Miracle Network in an effort to improve the lives of these patients.

The proceeds have been used to purchase life-saving medical equipment, fund pediatric research and purchase diversionary activities such as computers, games and toys for the children. Not only does Dance Marathon at UF contribute to the treatment of children, but also to the search for cures to some of the most common, yet currently incurable diseases like diabetes, cancer, and cystic fibrosis to name a few.
